Science in Society
This project combines humanities and chemistry through the medium of argument. Students learn two types of arguments: rational and empirical. In humanities, students study the philosophy of ethics and develop arguments about controversial scientific issues, such as organ transplantation and the development of genetically modified organisms. In chemistry, students learn data collection and how to formulate empirical arguments which are used to support philosophical claims. For a final product, students create infographics that express empirical or philosophical arguments. The project culminates in a salon night exhibition of learning during which students display their infographics, perform skits related to philosophical and scientific case studies, and conduct seminars in which their parents are invited to participate.
